The Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) advises all truck drivers and transport operators to exercise heightened caution following the collapse of the Kakoso Bridge on the T3 Road, a critical route leading to the Kasumbalesa Border Post. This disruption initially resulted in the diversion of traffic to Mukambo Border Post and Sakania Border Post. We are, however, pleased to note that a temporary road and detour at the affected site are now open and operational, restoring partial connectivity along the corridor. Road users are strongly advised to strictly follow all traffic guidance, signage, and instructions from on-site authorities when using the detour to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow.
Transporters using the Mukambo route are urged to exercise extreme caution, particularly during the rainy season, as deteriorated road conditions continue to pose safety risks to heavily loaded vehicles. Operators are advised to ensure vehicles are roadworthy and compliant with load regulations, plan for longer travel times, maintain regular communication with fleet controllers and relevant authorities, and strictly adhere to all road safety and traffic regulations.
The WBCG commends the Zambian Government, through the Road Development Agency, for working around the clock to install a temporary bridge structure and implement the detour to restore connectivity and mitigate the impact on trade and logistics operations while long-term permanent solutions are being pursued.
Commenting on the situation, James Kaposa, WBCG’s Zambia Business Development Manager, stated, “While the temporary disruption presents operational challenges, the swift commissioning of a temporary road and ongoing bridge interventions demonstrate the resilience and responsiveness of our regional transport network. We remain confident that through continued coordination and collaboration, trade flows will be sustained as permanent restoration efforts progress.”
The WBCG, will continue to monitor developments along the Walvis Bay Ndola Lubumbashi Development Corridor as well as other corridors, and engage relevant stakeholders to strengthen trade facilitation measures and minimise disruptions and bottlenecks along the corridors, while facilitating the increase of cargo volumes for the Ports of Walvis Bay and Lüderitz.
