Transnamib and Botsrail sign collaborative agreement

Posted: 11 Mar 2019

TransNamib Holdings Ltd and Botswana Railways (BR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Gaborone, Botswana in November 2018. The MoU signed between the two railway operators, pertains to the development and operation of a container terminal in Gobabis.

The cooperation aims to increase trade between the two countries via the Trans Kalahari route. Although the two countries are not completely linked by rail yet, the MoU serves as a short to medium term partnership to connect the two rail companies via a rail-road intermodal service. By creating this agreement, the two rail operators hope to spur on the implementation of the Trans Kalahari Railway (TKR) project.

Endorsed by TransNamib CEO, Johny Smith and Botsrail CEO, Leonard Musa Makwinja, the MoU allows the two organisations to collaborate on business development and marketing on the route. It further includes operational excellence benchmarking with regards to business process re-engineering, systems maps, train plan automatisation, signalling systems, level crossings, siding connectivity and human capital related learnings.
